This course is aimed at the complete beginner, who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the technical processes underpinning traditional photography, and the historical developments that continue to inform its concepts, language and techniques to this day. You will be guided through the darkroom processes from shooting a roll of film, to developing a set of prints. As well as acquiring technical skills, you will learn creative approaches to capturing images, receive a historical overview of the subject, and have the opportunity to experiment with the creative possibilities of manual development and printing.
Film and paper are provided; you can bring your own 35mm film camera, if you have one.

Participants should have an interest in photography and want to try traditional photographic processes, to develop their creative practice.
This course will take place across two Saturdays. Starting on Saturday 12th October and concluding on Saturday 19th October, both sessions at 10am-5pm.
Camera control; Historical background to darkroom photography; How to load and control your camera for best exposures; Basic composition and guidance on getting the best shot; Basic control of natural light; Opportunity to go out and shoot a roll of film in response to a creative brief
Developing the film; Mixing chemicals and using the developing tank
Introduction to printing; Creating photograms and experimenting with creative processes; Printing a contact sheet; Using the enlarger and chemical machine printing
Improving on printing techniques; Printing single images; applying more advanced skills; Applying multigrade filters
At the end of the 4 sessions you will have learnt how to use your camera, and developed the confidence to take and develop a roll of film. You will create a contact sheet, be aware of how to edit and select the best images and understand how to enlarge and print using the darkroom facilities. You will take home a selection of darkroom prints.
Lasma Poisa is Latvian lens-based artist, currently living and working in Manchester. Poisa’s practice uses methods of documentary, portraiture and performance through both still and moving image. Poisa’s work has been exhibited in Brick Lane, London and in the exhibition From Common Differences as part of Diffusion: Cardiff International Festival of Photography. Her work was recently published in German Magazine, Nido. She has held a number of residencies, including in Photography at Swansea Metropolitan University and was Arts Outreach Coordinator at Locws International. Poisa currently works at The University of Salford.
